LLED 480G 96A | LLED 565G 96A

Registration is available for Credit and Non-Credit. See Registration & Fees for details.

Explore strategies, teaching exemplars, and resources that support the teaching and learning of Indigenous ways of knowing in classrooms, schools and communities.

Educators need to be able to respond to education reform that prioritizes improved educational outcomes for Indigenous children and youth.

Reconciliation is a focal point for building and sustaining respectful relationships among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in countries such as Canada and Australia, with relevance to the US and New Zealand.

Through the lens of reconciliation participants of this course will engage with educational leaders and resources that provide direction for how education programs and teaching practices can be modified in order to meaningfully integrate Indigenous knowledge worldviews and pedagogies in classrooms, schools and communities.

UBC MOOC – Massive Open Online Course

The MOOC content is a prerequisite for this summer institute. If you have taken this MOOC and received a certificate of completion, you will have already completed the prerequisite requirements of the Summer Institute and will only be required to participate in the face-to-face instruction.

For Summer Institute participants who have not received a certificate of completion, the MOOC content will be made available, from July 1 – July 13, prior to the start of the face-to-face component.

Dr. Jan Hare, University of British Columbia

Dr. Jan Hare, Associate Professor in Language and Literacy Education (LLED), is an Anishinaabe scholar and educator from the M’Chigeeng First Nation, located on Manitoulin Island in northern Ontario. Through her teaching and research in BC and across the country, she has sought to transform education in ways that are more inclusive of Indigenous ways of knowing and approaches to learning. Dr. Hare’s program of research extends to community-based partnerships, working mainly with provincial Aboriginal early learning organizations that include the Aboriginal Head Start Association of British Columbia (AHSABC) and the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society (BC ACCS).

In addition, she has been engaged in numerous curriculum projects in Indigenous education, including the development of a Language Immersion in Early Learning certificate program and the nationally funded Aboriginal Family and Community Literacy Curriculum. In BC, she has taken an advisory role on the English First Peoples 11 and English First Peoples 12 new secondary school curriculum offerings. Dr. Hare also led the development of the required course in Indigenous education for all our teacher candidates, along with resources to support faculty and teacher candidates in our program.
